Michael Sherman

Assistant Director

A native of Newton, Massachusetts, Michael Sherman began studying Suzuki violin at the age of five. He developed his musical foundation through programs and festivals across the Northeast and Midwest, gaining early experience as a soloist and concertmaster at the New England Conservatory Preparatory School and the Lutheran Summer Music Academy and Festival.

Michael attended the University of New Hampshire, where he studied violin with the late Mimi Bravar. At UNH, he served as concertmaster of the UNH Symphony Orchestra and was a founding member of a student-run, conductorless chamber orchestra, performing regularly as both leader and soloist.

Michael has performed with numerous ensembles including the Cambridge Symphony Orchestra, Harvard Summer Orchestra, Portsmouth Symphony, Symphony Pro Musica, and Reading Symphony Orchestra. As a member of the Cambridge Symphony, Michael was a concertmaster and member of the Board of Directors. In addition to modern violin, Michael is a fervent baroque violinist and a founding member of the DeLorean Quartet, a Boston-based period instrument quartet, and performs as a guest with the Boston University Baroque Orchestra on baroque violin and viola.

Deeply committed to music education, Michael is the Assistant Director of Southern Maine String Camp, where he has worked each summer since 2011. In addition to this role, he is responsible for the camp’s website, photography and videography-including the welcome video-and oversees marketing and social media. During the year, he collaborates with the camp director to shape a welcoming and enriching experience for campers. “My number one priority,” he says, “is to get kids to come to camp, and give them a reason to return year after year.”

Outside of camp, Michael blends his background in retail management with his passion for music as the General Manager of Johnson String Instrument and Carriage House Violins.

In his spare time, he enjoys photography, hiking, skiing, and working on creative projects for camp.
